Condition: There is slight foxing to parts of the picture and there is also a small worn area bottom left. This picture has been recently matted and framed both of which are in excellent condition.
Provenance: Estate collection of a doctor, Sydney, Australia. Reputedly purchased in England in the 1930s.
About: Circle of Joseph Mallord William Turner (English 1723-1851) J. M. W. Turner was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. Turner was known for his expressive colourisation, imaginative landscapes, turbulent and dramatic marine paintings. Turner was born in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, to a lower middle-class family. Turners was a child prodigy and he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts from 1789, enrolling when he was 14, and exhibited his first work there at 21. During this period, Turner also served as an architectural draftsman. Opening his own gallery in 1804, he became professor of perspective at the Academy in 1807, where he lectured until 1828. He traveled to Europe from 1802, typically returning with numerous sketchbooks.
Tintern Abbey was an extremely popular subject for Turner and one that he re-visited on several occasions. He has paintings of the Abbey in both the Tate Gallery and the V&A London. Turner was a leader in the Romanticism movement in Britain where pictures of ruins were in great demand.
