About: A 19th-century detailed study of one of the Piccolomini Library spandril frescoes in the Siena Cathedral, by British artist Edith Sanderson (RHA), painted whilst on a Grand Tour Study through Italy. A member of the Royal Hibernian Academy, Sanderson was an accomplished 19th-century artist who had regular exhibitions from 1893-1908.

A spandril is an ornamented triangular space between the right or left exterior curve of an arch and an enclosing right angle. The ceiling frescoes in the library are attributed to Girolamo del Pacchia, Giacomo Pacchiarotto and Littifredi Corbizi and date from 1502. The decoration is inspired by the Domus Aurea, a vast landscaped complex built by Emperor Nero in 68 AD and the motif of the ancient grotesques. A photograph of the original spandril is included in the gallery of images.
