About: This is a fine and imposing example of a large Russian 18th-century Orthodox Icon portraying the prophets David and Elijah. Finely painted with oil paint on a thick wooden panel, with haloes made of gold. This icon is from The Prophets Tier in an Iconostasis (a wall of icons and religious paintings, separating the nave from the sanctuary in a church) that contained images of Old Testament prophets who predicted the coming of the Saviour Jesus Christ. It features King David standing with Elijah known as Ilya in the Slavic world.

In other Orthodox iconography, Kind David is often portrayed next to those who foresaw the coming of Christ. Whilst Elijah is also depicted ascending to the heavens on his chariot of fire. This icon reads as a foretelling of what is to come and a sign of validation and strength within the Orthodox faith.
