About the Painting: Vincent van Gogh painted “The Starry Night” in 1889 during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. While Van Gogh lived well in the hospital, he was allowed freedoms that other patients were not. He was able to if attended, leave the hospital grounds, and he was granted permission to paint and read along with maintaining the privacy of his own room.
The painting “The Starry Night” is an example of van Gogh’s artistic expression of emotion through colour. Darker tones and blues would often occupy his palette during bouts of depression or less favourable times. A deliberate shift in pallet and style was a way for van Gogh to purge his inner emotion, much the same as many artists proceeding and following him have, most notably the work of Pablo Picasso.
The original inspiration for “The Starry Night” may have been born out of despair but the imaginative dreamlike quality given to the subject, the mark-making and the colour are readily viewed as beautifully pure and hypnotic. The sentiment is proven that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and such is Vincent's story that he could paint beauty but could not always see it, especially when it was his own.
