About the Artist: In recent times Vermeer has enjoyed a resurgence in the popularity of his work. He was barely mentioned in Arnold Houbraken's major source book on 17th-century Dutch painting and as a consequence was erased from the subsequent surveys of Dutch art for nearly two centuries following his death. Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque Period painter who specialised in domestic interiors of the middle class. He was a successful artist, however, records show he produced a relatively low output of only 50 works, of which only 34 are known to survive.
Vermeer was a slow painter who was quite meticulous with detail, which was evident in his working practice as he frequently used expensive pigments and materials to satisfy his thirst for perfection. Vermeer was known for manipulating the treatment of light, and just how that light could evoke an emotive response enabled him to be able to transform works of relatively mundane subjects into what are now considered some of the most desirable works of art of the 17th century. Almost all his known paintings feature the same models and are composed in the same rooms within his house. The “ordinary” in the works of Johannes Vermeer teaches us that beauty often sits in plain sight, we just need to open our eyes.
About the Painting: The Vermeer masterpiece “Girl with a Pearl Earring” is an example of a tronie, a type of painting that portrays an exaggerated or characteristic facial expression. This was a common genre work of the Dutch Golden Age and Flemish Baroque. When conceived these works were never intended as portraits but rather studies of human expression, race, and uniqueness of facial features. Artists would use this genre to explore the grotesque to seemingly unattainable beauty.
Girl with a Pearl Earring has been known by several names since the death of Vermeer. A painting that is one of only 34 known surviving works, yet arguably one of the most recognisable images of the Baroque. It has gone on to influence contemporary popular culture, from poetry to film along with the world of contemporary visual art.
