About: Clay pottery sculpture of Kukai, the Japanese Buddhist monk who is revered as one of the intellectual giants in Japanese history. The handcast piece dating from at least the early 19th century is of a lovely quality and condition, considerate of the work’s age and medium.
Traces of pigment can be seen in the robe, with the only major loss being the absence of beads in the left hand of Kukai. The Great Japanese Monk, also referred to posthumously as Kobo-Daishi, The Grand Master who propagated the Buddhist Teaching), 774–835.
