Title: Two Children Resting (Circa 1870).

Framed Size: Height 104 cm x Width 78 cm x Depth 8 cm.

Condition: The painting has recently been cleaned. Previous restoration includes the relining of the canvas. Partial label and auction inventory numbers in chalk visible to the stretcher and frame verso. The original gilt frame has some minor losses.
Provenance: Private Collection Sydney.

About: Two children resting is a very similar composition to Schneider’s well-known “The Last Survivors of a Family” Circa 1870 and likely part of a series that was completed at the time.

On the top stretcher bar of the work, verso to the image, a part dealer label remains with the partially handwritten name of Schneider.

Félicie Schneider or Felicie Fournier (1831-1888) was a French portrait painter. Born in Saint-Cloud and first learned to paint from her father, Amable Nicolas Fournier and later went to the school run by Leon Cogniet. She exhibited works at the Paris Salon from 1849.

Her work The Last Survivors of a Family, was included in the book Women Painters of the World.
