Elioth Gruner was well know for his high key impressionist landscape paintings, a master of capturing light and the atmosphere of the moment. Gruner studied at the Julian Ashton schooI of art in Sydney where he meet Max Meldrum. Meldrum was the founder of an art movement known as Australian Tonalism that emerged in Melbourne during the 1910s. Meldrum's followers were many, among the most notable being Clarice Beckett, Colin Colahan and William Frater. The influence of Tonalisim had a profound and lasting effect on Gruner which can be observed in his paintings.
