About: This small oil on plywood panel appears to be a compositional study for a larger work, the piece is unsigned. This is not unusual when considering the size along with the work already being titled lower left.

Payne often painted “en plein air” along with numerous sketches from which he would later reference for his studio paintings, many of these studies contain elements that would be combined to compose the final work.

The title lower left reads "Chioggia", one of the Italian ports in which Payne created compositional studies portraying the fleets of tuna and sardine boats that were ever present along Italian and French Coastal towns.

The compositional structure and crop of the work are reflective of Payne’s advanced understanding of light, shape and colour, with this being a significant element of his practice, Payne was often referred to as "A master of landscape composition and colour".
