About: Titled Merman, this drawing by Berthold Löffler, depicts a Merman holding a three-pointed harpoon with a fish in his hand and was published as one of 34 original unbound lithographs in 1925 in conjunction with the publication Die vier Elemente (The four elements).

A Merman is the male counterpart of the mythical female mermaid, they are legendary creatures that are male humans from the waist up and fish-like from the waist down, but may also assume a normal human shape and are often described as handsome. The Merman, Neptune and Aquarius are subjects that are featured throughout Löffler’s oeuvre.

Berthold Löffler was one of Austria’s foremost artists of the late 19th, and early 20th centuries. His work spans several disciplines as an artist, illustrator, graphic designer and ceramist, he also illustrated books and worked as a fresco painter and was also well known for his Art Deco poster designs. Löffler produced designs for both the Cabaret Fledermaus and the Palais Stoclet. Löffler’s works are held in numerous private and institutional collections worldwide including The Met New York and MoMA.
